10-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary 2026: Day-by-Day Northern Circuit Guide

10-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary 2026: Day-by-Day Northern Circuit Guide

Ten days is the sweet spot for a Tanzania safari — long enough to see the full Northern Circuit at a relaxed pace, with time to photograph properly, wait for the perfect lion hunt, and not feel rushed between parks. This complete 10-day Tanzania safari itinerary covers Tarangire, three nights in the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, an Arusha cultural tour, and the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. Here is exactly what to do, day by day, with costs, logistics, and insider tips from our Arusha-based guide team.

Tanzania 10-day safari itinerary — Serengeti plains with acacia trees and wildlife
The Serengeti at dawn — three full nights gives you the light, the quiet, and the time to witness Tanzania's greatest wildlife spectacle properly.

Why 10 Days is the Ideal Tanzania Safari Length

The classic 5-day Tanzania safari is good. The 7-day safari is better. But 10 days is the first length at which you can genuinely experience each park rather than just pass through it:

  • Serengeti (3 nights): Most visitors spend only 1–2 nights. Three nights means you can cover the central, western, and northern zones, wait for crossings or predator sightings, and experience the Serengeti at both dawn and dusk — the hours when it is genuinely alive.
  • Tarangire (full day): Africa's best-kept secret, especially in the dry season. One day here is enough to understand what makes it extraordinary — elephant herds of 100+, ancient baobabs, and exceptional predator diversity.
  • Ngorongoro (full day): A full crater floor game drive with time to wait at the hippo pool and scan for rhino in morning light.
  • Cultural days: Days 8–9 add Arusha cultural tour and the Marangu/Kilimanjaro slopes — unique additions that no 5-day safari has room for, and that give your trip a dimension beyond wildlife.

10-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary: Day by Day

Day 1 — Arrive Arusha

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — 45 minutes from Arusha. Your driver-guide meets you at arrivals and transfers you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to acclimatize, explore Arusha town, or visit the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre. Recommended accommodation: Arusha Coffee Lodge or African Tulip for mid-range/high-end; Ilboru Safari Lodge for budget.

Drive time: 45 min KIA → Arusha | Meals: dinner

Day 2 — Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Early departure (07:00) for Tarangire National Park, 2.5 hours from Arusha. Tarangire is famous for its extraordinary elephant concentrations — particularly July–October when the Tarangire River is the only water source and thousands of animals converge. A full day on game drive in Tarangire is one of Tanzania's most underrated experiences. The ancient baobab trees are iconic, and the park has excellent populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and oryx. Overnight at Tarangire (tented camp or lodge depending on your tier).

Drive: 2.5 hrs | Game drive: full day | Meals: all included

Day 3 — Tarangire to Karatu/Ngorongoro Rim

Morning game drive in Tarangire, then depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (2.5 hours). Arrive at your crater rim lodge or Karatu area accommodation in the afternoon. The sunset from the crater rim — looking down into the caldera as mist rises from the floor — is one of Tanzania's most dramatic sights. Drinks on the rim at dusk. Early dinner and early bed: tomorrow starts at 06:30.

Drive: 2.5 hrs | Meals: all included

Day 4 — Full Day Ngorongoro Crater

Descend the crater wall at 07:00 sharp. The 610-metre descent takes 30 minutes on a winding track that drops through highland forest into a different world. A full day on the crater floor (6–8 hours) covers all key habitats: the open grasslands for lions and rhino, the Lerai Forest for elephants and leopard, Ngoitokitok Springs for hippos, and Lake Magadi for flamingos. Lunch is taken in the crater (packed box lunch from your camp). Return to the rim by 16:00. Celebrate with sundowners overlooking the caldera.

Crater floor: 07:00–16:00 | Meals: all included

Day 5 — Ngorongoro to Central Serengeti

Depart the crater rim early and drive 3 hours through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the Serengeti. En route, stop at the Olduvai Gorge (1 hour) — the archaeological site where the earliest human remains were discovered, with a small but fascinating museum. Arrive in the central Serengeti (Seronera area) by lunchtime. Afternoon game drive in one of Africa's most iconic landscapes. Overnight at your Serengeti camp.

Drive: 3 hrs | Olduvai stop: 1 hr | Meals: all included

Day 6 — Full Day Central Serengeti

A full day based from the central Serengeti (Seronera Valley), the heart of the park and the year-round stronghold of the resident wildlife. The Seronera River is lined with sausage trees where leopards rest, and the kopjes (granite rock outcroppings) host lion prides. If the migration is present (January–March or June–October), this is where the herds congregate before moving north or south. Two extended game drives: dawn and dusk, with a midday break at camp.

Game drive: dawn + dusk | Meals: all included

Day 7 — Serengeti Explorer Day (Optional Balloon Safari)

This day can be used for optional balloon safari at dawn — a 1-hour float over the Serengeti plains followed by a champagne bush breakfast, one of Tanzania's most luxurious experiences ($550–$600 per person, bookable in advance). Afternoon: explore a different Serengeti zone — drive north toward the Lobo area for tree-climbing lions, or south toward the Ndutu Plains for cheetah and calving grounds (seasonal). Overnight central Serengeti.

Optional: balloon at 06:00 | Game drive: afternoon | Meals: all included

Day 8 — Serengeti to Arusha: Arusha Cultural Tour

Morning game drive, then depart the Serengeti for Arusha (3.5 hours via the Ngorongoro NCA or by charter flight to Arusha Airport). Afternoon: Arusha cultural tour. This half-day programme includes the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre (authentic Tanzanian art, jewellery, and crafts), a coffee plantation tour (Tanzania's Arabica coffee grown on the slopes of Mount Meru), and a local market visit. This day grounds your safari experience in Tanzanian culture and history.

Drive: 3.5 hrs | Cultural tour: 3–4 hrs | Overnight: Arusha

Day 9 — Marangu / Kilimanjaro Slopes Cultural Tour

Drive 1.5 hours to Marangu village on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro (1,400m). A full day with a local Chagga guide includes: a walk through coffee and banana shamba (farm plots), a visit to the Chagga caves (underground tunnels used for protection during 19th-century tribal conflicts), a waterfall hike (Kinukamori Falls), and a Chagga lunch prepared by a local family. The views of Kilimanjaro above the clouds — if the mountain appears — are extraordinary. Return Arusha by early evening.

Drive: 1.5 hrs each way | Full-day Marangu tour | Overnight: Arusha

Day 10 — Departure

Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. If your flight is afternoon, there is time for a final Arusha coffee shop visit, last-minute shopping at Cultural Heritage, or a massage at your hotel. End of safari.
